Pond Biology Reactivated

Client:

WWTP not operated for 5+ years

Industry:

Wastewater

Location:

Victoria, Australia

Key Issues:

Client required WWTP ponds to be re-activated to recommence operations

Project Summary:

WWTP was not operated for 5+ years

6ML & 8ML capacity ponds

No mechanical intervention used (aerators etc.)

Challenge:

Client required WWTP ponds to be prepared in order to recommence plant operations

Results:

nutrient-pollution

After 10 weeks biological activity returned to ponds

Water Fleas (Daphnia Pulex) repopulated throughout ponds

reduction-of-scum

Daphnia Pulex are a key indicator of pond health

These bugs appear when water conditions improve and they feed on TSS and sludge

ammonia

They die off when water conditions are not good - particularly if nitrite and ammonia levels are high.

EPA Compliance (Water Quality)

In simple terms, their ponds became healthier and sludge consumption by Daphnia Pulex increased
